Poems
by Diane Webster

At Attention

Shipwreck aground

on the beach

with seagulls

perched around

its deck; sailors

in dress whites

stand at attention

as ship docks;

shore leave

cancelled.

a line, (a short one)

Journey Tracks

Long-legged shore bird

walks on its own reflection

as white foam ocean

massages the sand

between bird tracks

stitching a journey

for seafood cuisine.

a line, (a short one)

Giggles Away

Ripples giggle echoes

away as raindrops

plop on the pond

in effervescent bursts

massaging from shore

to shore; cattail herd

releases fluffy confetti

floating on tickle waves.

a line, (a short one)

Summer Musings

On drought-brown lawn

shadows of tree limbs

in jigsaw-puzzle shapes;

shrunken river shore

with mud drying

into parchment curls;

mosaic pattern smiles

in jack-o’lantern style

missing teeth flickering

by candlelight.

a line, (a short one)

Biding Time

The leaf reverses

its death

in an unfurl

from spring’s urn.

It stretches for sunshine

to fill its belly,

to flow through

its umbilical veins,

to surge into adulthood

with a nose thumb to wind

biding its time.

a black line
