Poems

Spring 2022

Drinking craft beer

and listening to music off a laptop

in the kitchen of a rented house

wasn’t a great way to start

that spring,

but neither was hearing

how the lung cancer

took your voice away,

while all we knew

was exactly what not to say.

a line, (a short one)

The Opposite of Blacking Out

Looking at the sunlight shine

between the fallen dead trees

in my backyard is a lot

like drinking a nonalcoholic Guiness

on Saint Patrick’s Day

and wondering what happened

to all the drunken nights

that illuminated my younger days.

a line, (a short one)

Another Easter

It’s easier to find

some religious indignation

for a chocolate rabbit

melting in its own package

on a Tuesday

rather than for a god reborn

because it’s hard to pass

around a collection plate

for a dead deity,

but don’t get me wrong-

the spirits probably believe in us

just as much as us in them.

a black line
